Highly praised in his short lifetime (he was born in 1785 and died rather mysteriously in 1806), Pinto fell into a long neglect in Victorian times and references to him are few. More recently there has been a revival of interest, thanks chiefly to Nicholas Temperley, who edited the volume of the London Pianoforte School which included all his piano music, and who writes about him in the insert-note to this record. It is not the first recording of his music, but it gives a good introduction to a talented and sympathetic musician.
Whatever would have become of him if ‘dissipation and consequent idleness’ (to quote a contemporary) had not impeded his career, one cannot guess. But there is a romantic talent ahead of his time in these sonatas. He has a melancholy vein, though perhaps not so consistent a one as these performances suggest. O’Rourke is a sympathetic pianist, and he responds sensitively to Pinto’s gentle musings, his highly individual chromatic inflections and the affecting harmonic sideslips that can anticipate their use by Schubert. But there is a greater energy to be found in some of the faster movements, with their markings con spirito, con brio, agitato con fuoco e con espressione and so forth. Moreover, the gaiety of the Rondo on the popular Irish tune Cory Owen is somewhat muted (Pinto’s friend John Field also wrote a rondo on it). But O’Rourke handles well the quite ambitious sonata structures which Pinto employs, and clearly he has a strong feeling for music which certainly deserves the wider audience this record should bring.
