Gian Paolo Fagotto, Il Terzo Suono, Daltrocanto, Chorus Beatorum, La Fenice, Il Suonar Parlante – War and Faith (2004)

War and Faith: a coupling that was not only related to Crusaders but to many aspects during the Renaissance and the early Baroque. And both War and Faith had a common denominator in the music. This disc tries to reconstitute the music which escorted warriors before, during and after two of those battles which stained Europe with blood in the 16th century.
French and Spanish/Milanese armies had a cruel conflict in the Northern Part of Italy between 1515 and 1525. Two memorable battles, the Battle of Marignano and that of Pavia, changed the face of the Northern Italy and excited the fantasy of various composers of that century. The great Jannequin composed his “La Guerre” for the French victory at Marignano, the Flemish-Italian composer Werrecore released for the subsequent victory of the Spanish at Pavia a unique vocal masterpiece “La Bataglia Taliana” and Mainerio who was one of the greatest even if neglected Italian composer released two Magnificat so called “Magnificat of the battles”.
