Emmanuel Pahud – Bach, C.P.E.- Flute Concertos (2016) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach has a prominent advocate there: Emmanuel Pahud, the principal flutist of the Berliner Philharmoniker and currently the only flutist with broad influence. Now one could argue that Pahud – already 20 years active on the record market-has already recorded everything else, including all sonatas by Father Bach with Trevor Pinnock on harpsichord. The fact that Pahud has recorded three flute concertos by the Bach son with Pinnock and the Kammerakademie Potsdam, however, has to do with his genuine enthusiasm for the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel.
Pahud immersed himself in the world at the Potsdam court of Frederick the Great in the preparation of his “Flute King”CD; the flutist was fascinated by the musical developments and breaks in the environment of the Prussian king. He thinks in terms of cultural history as far as it is rare among instrumentalists – especially wind players. For Pahud, Emanuel’s music even reflects a “longing for a new, republican Germany”. If this includes the expression of self-confident individuality, Pahud is able to make this sound excellent. The flutist has internalized that the musical language of the Bach son is above all “speaking”. Pahud presents the adornments, spreadings, even the mocked expression with disarming matter of course; he savors deeply the slow movements in their mournful affect, final movements such as that of the concerto in G major Wq 169 carry traits of a high spirits on the border of affectation. Pahud remains on the ground with all this, but is able to make the emotional worlds his own. In addition to the exciting accompanying postdamers, one of the main reasons why Carl Philipp Emanuel’s music receives a stable grounding here, which leaves no other choice: One should not underestimate him.
