EXCERPTS FROM THE MAIN BOOK

“Danny Trejo, the actor, may appear on screen as a baddie who has been slain at least 100 times. In various instances, he’s been shot, stabbed, hanged, chopped apart, smashed by an elevator, and even melted into a bloody mush. Off-screen, he’s a hero adored by both recovery communities and adoring fans. Danny Trejo, on the other hand, is significantly more complicated than the mythology.

Raised in an abusive home, Danny struggled with drug addiction and stints in a number of the country’s most notorious state prisons-including San Quentin and Folsom-from an early age, before starring in films like Heat, From Dusk to Dawn, and Machete, which have become modern classics. Danny takes us through the tremendous ups and downs of his life in this amusing, heartbreaking, and thrilling book, including meeting one of the world’s most notorious serial murderers in prison and dealing with legends like Charles Bronson and Robert De Niro.

In an honest, unflinching, and “inspirational study within the definition of character,” Trejo reveals how he dealt with the horrors of prison, rebuilt himself after finding sobriety and spirituality in solitary confinement, and drew inspiration for the film roles that made him a household name from the adrenaline-fueled robbing heists of his past (Kevin Smith, director, and actor). He also discusses the terrible inconsistencies in his own life. Although he speaks about his past everywhere from prison yards to NPR to inspire many others on their own path to recovery and forgiveness, he struggles to help his children with their own addictions and to form lasting connections.

Trejo may be a portrayal of a tremendous existence and a memorable and remarkable journey, redemptive and sad, emotional and real.”
