Formed in 2009 as a solo vehicle for Sydney-based singer/songwriter Dave Hosking, Boy & Bear specializes in evocative and heartfelt indie folk-rock in the vein of contemporaries like Fleet Foxes, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Mumford & Sons. Rounded out by guitarist Killian Gavin, bass player Dave Symes, and brothers Tim (drums) and Jon Hart (mandolin, keyboards), the Aussie quintet inked a record deal with Island Records on the strength of its independently released first single, “Mexican Mavis.” The group’s debut EP, With Emperor Antarctica, dropped in early 2010, followed in 2011 by Boy & Bear’s debut long-player, Moonfire, which went platinum in their native Australia. The band’s sophomore outing, 2013’s Harlequin Dream, would go gold. Their next album was captured, as much as possible, live in the studio direct to tape with producer Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, the Vaccines), and represented a shift into synth-aided guitar pop. As a Boy & Bear fan, this EP works great. B&B seems very consistent in the quality of the work and provide infectious folk/rock/pop with a certain spiritual and emotional depth. Fans of Fleet Foxes should take note of this band and give them a try. Similar flavor and consistency. Top notch.

Championed by Mumford & Sons on their 2010 Australian tour, support act Boy & Bear didn’t exactly strike while the nu-folk iron was hot, waiting a full year to follow-up their debut EP, With Emperor Antarctica, with their first full-length album, Moonfire, recorded in Nashville with producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, the Shins). Judging by its number two position in their homeland, the timing proved to be a smart move that has allowed the Sydney outfit to step out of the shadows of its British contemporaries. Lead vocalist Dave Hosking’s earnest bluesy tones are undeniably in the same ballpark as Marcus Mumford, while the stripped-back mandolin-led “House & Farm” and the anthemic indie folk of “Big Man” and “Lordy May” could fit quite comfortably on Sigh No More. But the solo project turned five-piece band’s ambitions extend far beyond those of the tweed waistcoat-wearing brigade. “Milk & Sticks” is a schizophrenic three minutes of experimental indie rock, which starts out as an Arcade Fire-esque new wave stomper before turning into an organ-led slice of baroque pop and then back again; “Part Time Believer,” whose lush West Coast harmonies bear an uncanny resemblance to America’s “A Horse with No Name,” is an affectionate homage to Hosking’s parents’ record collection; and the reggae guitar hooks, lilting melodies, and Afro-beat percussion of “The Village” could give Vampire Weekend a run for their money in the Paul Simon pastiche stakes. The misplaced ’60s-style psychedelic freak-outs on the barroom hoedown of “Golden Jubilee” suggest their experimental tendencies occasionally need reining in, while the gorgeously atmospheric but all too brief banjo-plucking interlude “Percy Warner Park” would surely have been more worth exploring further than the slightly pedestrian country-pop of “My Only One.” But in an increasingly crowded contemporary folk scene, Boy & Bear should be applauded for producing an album that at least attempts to bring something new to the table. On the evidence of Moonfire, they might not need such star-studded plaudits in the near future.

Following their debut award-winning album Moonfire, Boy & Bear released Harlequin Dream, their bold and brave 2013 album recorded in their hometown of Sydney at legendary Alberts Studio and mixed by Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse). The lead single, “Southern Sun,” has a powerful urgency not unlike the best of Bruce Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac, while a sprinkling of strings and brass brings life and color to such standouts as “Back down the Black,” “Old Town Blues” and “Stranger.” Boy & Bear’s debut record Moonfire won five ARIA awards, including Album of the Year.
If you liked late 70’s, early 80’s folk rock, like or current folk revival, such as Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Son or the sundry others in the genre, you’ll enjoy this album.I decided to check them out after hearing ‘Southern Son’ on the radio and bought the album after previewing the other songs on the album.Others have compared them with Fleetwood Mac or Bruce Springsteen, but for me the first song was a dead ringer for Chris Rea in the late ’70s, who may be unfamiliar to most US listeners (Most well known song in the US would be ‘Road to Hell’ from 1989). I’ve really enjoyed the entire album and can’t keep ‘Southern Sun’ out of my head. I look forward to checking out their first album!
